The computer in your garage is the heart of ProtoWorks. It's where you design products, accept orders and do research. Until now it was a grey block. Time for something better.

Concept art first

We always start with concept art that sets the shape, colours and details. Only once it's approved do we make a 3D model. This one became a rugged workstation with three screens, orange-and-black shapes and cyan light.

Then the 3D model

The model was made with Meshy Image-to-3D, with a 10,000-triangle budget and PBR textures. The first attempt from four views wasn't good enough; the second, from a single three-quarter view, was.

In the game

In Unity the model got a collider and its own prefab. Everything still works: you can move, use and save the computer. One limitation: the screens are part of a single mesh, so they can't move on their own.

This computer was actually replaced again later this month. More on that in a later post.
