Until now, Lawn Mower Empire never told you why you were mowing. You started in a backyard, the grass grew back, and you kept going. That loop is fun, but it deserved a reason. So the game now has a story: The Big Growth Spurt.

A rusty mower and an old journal

It starts with a letter from Aunt Roos, a retired groundskeeper. She leaves you her old mower and her field journal, and asks you to tidy up her backyard before the neighbours come for dinner on Saturday. Simple enough. Except the grass comes straight back.

Aunt Roos' opening letter

Soon everyone is calling you with the same complaint. A lawn seed company called EverGreen sold a new grass with the promise "Never a bald spot again." The promise works a little too well.

Three voices

  • Aunt Roos: your mentor and first client. She knows grass and she knows people.
  • Noor: an inventor who builds your bigger machines and helps you figure out what is wrong with the seed. She thinks big and occasionally underestimates the braking distance.
  • Victor van Spriet: EverGreen's CEO, who prefers to speak of "exceptional growth performance".

Every line is voiced, and the music steps back while someone is talking. Clients on the early areas get their own short job briefs and a reaction when you finish their lawn for the first time.

A client's job brief slides in while you mow

It never stops your mowing

The story stays out of the way. Big moments arrive as a letter that pauses the game; everything else slides in as a small card in the corner while you keep driving. Nothing pops up while a menu is open, and when you buy a pile of upgrades at once you get the most important message, not ten of them.

The story follows your progress through the five area groups, from "Just the Garden" to "The World Needs a Mower". Skip an area or end a season early and it still moves on, because every reveal also has a backup trigger based on how much you have mowed in total. Everything you need for the ending arrives before the billion square metres.

The story journal

Everything you have received is kept in a new story journal (press J, or the new JOURNAL button). Letters and messages are sorted by chapter, unread ones have a red dot, and you can replay every voice line. The HUD now also shows one short line with what the story needs from you right now.

The story journal

The story survives End Season: the money and upgrades reset as before, but nothing you have discovered is told twice. Already have a save? You get one short catch-up letter from Roos instead of a pile of old messages.

And a red QUIT button

A small one from the same update: the QUIT button on the main menu is now properly red.

How it ends? We will let Roos tell you that herself.
